Something got my attention lately. While i do fully support the idea the everyone regardless of race, gender, nationality and sexual preference is equal as a human being you can go too far. So far even that you are turning the tables of discrimination 180 degrees. I fear this is while in a light form happening at Microsoft.
Lets first go back in time a bit. When the DE version of Age of Empires III released i also found some strange things. You must know that Age3 takes place in the colonial age. An age where equal rights where a joke. In the remaster of the game however Microsoft changed things that made it while still a racists time period a little less rough around the edges. Words like plantation and colonial were sometimes replaces with less harming words. But i already wrote about that in the past so lets continue.
The reason this came up again is because of two Microsoft store banners. The first one was “games chosen by our black community” featuring games with a main character with a dark skin color or games they people with a dark skin color enjoy. So what is wrong about that? Well what happens if you did the same for the “white community”? Than they would be called racists. And this is what i mean with a 180 degrees turn in discrimination. I’m glad that people with a dark skin color get accepted and rightfully so but going this way it will be discrimination to white people.
The second one is about the same thing. This time it was with woman. This again would be weird if it were men.
So as a white man myself who sees all people as equal this feels a bit weird. What have i done wrong is a question that comes to mind. And while this is nothing compared to what black people and woman lived trough for centuries. It is still weird. The best thing to do here is just no name any race or gender at all. Change it for example to “games that are loved around the world” or something. That is something everyone can find their self in. Instead of saying you belong to that group and you to the other. I mean i’m afraid that even if Microsoft does a white male thing it may says white males love Fallout 76 or something. That would be brute discrimination don’t you think?
And while i do not think Microsoft did this with any wrong intentions at all, i just hope that if they read this they see my point here.
